Chapter 2

Farewells

In this chapter, Elissa wakes up from her dream and tests out Sychaeus' claims.  She decides that she is truly in danger and leaves her house to gather people who will help her.  When she has gotten everyone to meet her in a hidden cave, she explains that she is leaving with her sister.  The people tell her that they will follow her, and Elissa thanks them.
Then, Elissa leaves to try to find Sychaeus' body.  After saying goodbye and ceremoniously placing a coin under his tongue as payment for Charon at the River Styx, Elissa is picked up by her sister in a small boat.
On the large boat, Elissa thanks her people again, and then decides to change her name to Dido, which means 'the wanderer'.  The people show their devotion to Dido and call her queen.

Chapter 1

Beginnings and Endings

In this chapter, you learn about the life of Elissa, who is a princess of a city called Tyre.  After she talks about her family, her father suddenly falls ill and abruptly dies.  Her brother Pygmalion, sister Anna, and herself mourn.  Against their father's wishes to share the crown, Pygmalion takes over the throne by himself.
Elissa marries a man named Sychaeus, whom she falls deeply in love with.  She begins to have troubling dreams, where her brother sneaks into her room at night and kills Sychaeus.  When Sychaeus goes missing one morning, Elissa is embarrassed by considering the thought that her brother would kill her husband.  Even so, she begs Pygmalion to search for him.
After the search appears to have come up empty, Elissa returns home and dreams about Sychaeus.  He explains that Pygmalion has murdered him and thrown his body over the cliffs by the sea.  He gives proof in the dream by explaining where he had hidden a secret stash of money.  Finally, Sychaeus tells Elissa that she must take her sister, change her name, and leave Tyre before Pygmalion can kill her as well.

Welcome!

Hey people!
Welcome to my blog!  My name is Rachel, and I am currently studying Landscape Architecture at the University of Rhode Island.  I started writing my book after experimenting with writing stories.  I started writing short stories and sharing them with my friends.  When my friends liked them, I was encouraged to write more.
My book, DIDO: QUEEN OF CARTHAGE, is a fictional book, written mostly from the point of view of the main character, Dido.  It is based off of the Roman myth of Dido, and parts of the Aeneid, which my high school Latin teacher (Mrs. M-D!!!!!) would read in class.
In this blog I would like to ask people what they think, post ideas, and give a general idea of what I'm planning to do.
Please feel more than welcome to comment, throw me an opinion or idea, or even just learn more about a wonderful myth!
